Northern River Basins Study Preliminary Interim Report Released

News Release
February 12, 1996

A five-year, independent study examining the health of northern rivers is nearing completion. Preliminary research data from the Northern River Basins Study interim reports indicate the water quality in the Peace River has not been adversely impacted and is in good health.

Tom Tarpey, Peace River Pulp's environmental manager says, "The findings of the early technical reports show the Peace River is in good condition. It's a good news story for the industry. It shows we've been doing a good job."

"Findings from our water quality research match the interim reports from the Northern River Basins Study, " says Tarpey. Peace River Pulp's Environmental Effects Monitoring project investigated the effects of our effluent on water, fish and sediment (mud) from the Peace river. The project cost over $250,000 and a final report will be available in April.

The Northern River Basins study was initiated on September 27, 1991, to examine the relationship between development and the condition of the Peace, Athabasca, and Slave river basins in northern Alberta. Funding was shared equally by the governments of Alberta and Canada. The final report will be issued at the end of March.
